Foreverland, Canada Day, and Olivia
My fourth studio album turns one year old today, and a note about my friend Olivia
It’s not often you have two major reasons to celebrate on a given day, but here we are!
Happy Canada Day!
Today is Canada Day, and a wonderful opportunity to look back on the bright spots that have shone through despite the immense darkness many of us have felt here over the past few years.
My friend
shared this lovely series of pictures, memes and memories from Canada’s most impactful civil rights protest in modern history. He also highlighted me alongside a selection of inspiring Canadian leaders who I myself look up to, including and James Corbett of — and of course, Gabe himself.Happy Foreverland Day!
But this July 1st also marks the one-year anniversary of the release of my fourth studio album, Foreverland!
I’ve had a lot of fun sharing it with you all over the last year, and appreciate greatly everyone who has bought a copy of their own. If this is something you want to add to your personal music collection, you can grab a physical CD or digital download over on Bandcamp. But in honour of Canada Day, you can also listen to the entire album for free right here!
Remembering my friend Olivia
But just as there is plenty of celebration to be had, I also want to share a bit of mourning by marking one year since my friend and teacher Olivia Quan died.
On July 1, 2022, Olivia died suddenly while working on her laptop in bed at home.1 Her employer, Monarch Studios, revealed shortly afterwards that she died of a “brain bleed,” despite describing her death as being due to “natural causes.”2
And so, today, among the celebrations, I will be thinking about Olivia, doing my best to focus on the positive way she influenced my life and the legacy she’s left for everyone who knew her. A scholarship was set up in her name, which will help the next generation of audio engineers step into the big shoes she left. I have more to say, but not today.
For now, I will leave you all with a Happy Canada Day, and I hope you too find many reasons to celebrate!
